Nationwide and First Data take Clover to the Edge of Space
The way we shop is evolving at an unprecedented rate and this is largely being driven by consumers expecting an integrated buying experience that is quick, consistent, secure, and available wherever they happen to be, at any time, and through any type of device.
At First Data we are determined to drive the future of commerce with more options for businesses of any size, location and type to build intelligent payment systems that are customized for their needs - be that on the highstreet or at 100,000 feet!
We recently partnered with Nationwide Building Society to focus on the increasing adoption of contactless payments in the UK. Each day Nationwide members make over £5 million worth of contactless payments and they wanted to celebrate this quick, easy and convenient way to pay and highlight how technology has transformed our day-to-day lives by undertaking the first contactless payment in the edge of space.
At 100,000 feet, and minus 30 degrees Celsius, Nationwide’s Visa contactless card faced inhospitable conditions and working in partnership with First Data, our technicians had to develop a specially designed Clover™ Mobile terminal to process a transaction at this altitude, including testing the device in a giant freezer!
